A  concussion, typically caused by a direct blow to the head, is a common sports injury, particularly in high-contact sports and can have severe short- and long-term effects.

If you think you might have a concussion:

  • Seek medical care immediately.
  • Avoid any additional trauma to your head—do not engage in any activity that carries a risk of head injury.
  • Limit activities of all kinds, including school and work.

How Can a Physical Therapist Help?

Physical therapists can evaluate and treat many problems related to concussion. Because no two concussions are the same, the physical therapist's examination is essential to assess your individual symptoms and limitations. The physical therapist then designs a treatment program to:

  • Help Stop Dizziness
  • Improve Balance
  • Reduce Headaches
  • Return to sports and recreational activities

Treatment focuses on reintroducing the inner ear vestibular system to dynamic activity in a careful and deliberate way and safe return to cardiovascular and impact activity.

Physical therapy for concussions is eligible for coverage by most insurance policies with your physician's referral. Please call (773) 665-9950 for more information.
