Schuermann's Disease |
Schuermann’s Disease is a primary hyper-kyphosis deformity where the individual demonstrates excess kyphosis or forward rounding of the thoracic (upper back) region. These individuals may still exhibit a lateral or rotational deviation like those classically diagnosed with scoliosis in addition. Average thoracic kyphosis naturally increases with age due to degenerative changes including osteopenia or osteoporosis. Schuermann’s Disease’s onset is in childhood. It is comprised of a 40 degree or greater curve, ventral wedging of the vertebra, irregular end plates and increased overall anterior-posterior (front to back) diameter of the thoracic cavity. Schroth can also be used to treat hyperkyphosis disorders, but most notably is geared toward scoliosis and Schuermann’s Disease. References:
