Almost 5% of people have loose joints, also known as joint hypermobility. Joint hypermobility increases risk for pain in the shoulder, knee, ankle and foot. In addition, some studies have shown that people with joint hypermobility have decreased awareness of where their bodies are positioned in space, a neurological skill called proprioception.
If the ligaments are loose, proprioceptive input is delayed, resulting in increased reaction time. The proprioceptive system responds to specific exercises that improve coordination, balace and ability to adapt to changes in the environment and working with a physical therapist can help.
