BoneFit

Osteoporosis and low bone mineral density (BMD) affect 54 million Americans or 60% of people over age 50. If you haven't thought about your bones lately, the time is now, because people with osteoporosis and low bone mineral density are at increased risk for all types of fractures. In fact, 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men older than 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their remaining lifetime, most frequently of the wrist, spine or hips. However, you can influence your risk for fracture and preserve more of your bone density by addressing lifestyle factors, engaging in exercise that targets your bones, and optimize your balance and strength to reduce your risk for falling.

The BoneFit™ program is an evidence-based program to prescribe safe and effective exercises for people who have or are at risk for osteoporosis. Bone Fit™ was developed by Osteoporosis Canada in conjunction with an advisory committee of expert clinicians and academics in area of osteoporosis and exercise.

  • Balancing training to reduce risk for fractures related to falls
  • Weight-bearing aerobic exercises to maintain and build bone density
  • Posture training to support optimal alignment and decrease risk for spinal compression fracture
  • Progressive endurance training for shoulder, hip, abdominal and back extensor muscles

The BoneFit™ is designed to provide education and guidance on appropriate exercise, fall prevention, adaptations for daily living and prevention of further bone loss.
